Map Portal Help

Maps for campylobacteriosis, cryptosporidiosis, meningococcal disease, and influenza display projected percentage changes in reported illness rates from the base rates of 2002. Maps for dengue display dengue fever potential probability projections, and those for Ross River fever display the projected proportion of the population exposed to Ross River virus. See the Modelling the Health Impacts of Climate Change Report [PDF, 6 MB] for full details.

Note: Due to the large amount of data behind each map, chosen maps can take some time to display. On occasion the following message may appear - "The Layer {layer name} is currently unavailable". The message can indicate that the map layer didn’t respond in a timely manner and refreshing the web page usually resolves the issue.

The Map Portal is best viewed in Internet Explorer 10 or later.

Map Navigation

  • Use the mouse by clicking and dragging or turning the scroll wheel to move or zoom the map.
  • The navigation ring at the bottom left of the map allows the map to be panned, zoomed or rotated. North and Full Extent reset buttons are located below the navigation ring.

Map Controls

  • To show cities and/or boundaries (e.g. District Health Boards) click the appropriate check box. Uncheck the box to hide.
  • To display a disease map, first select the disease from the drop down box. Then the year and emission scenario. Depending on the disease selected you can then choose:
    • Statistical for statistical model projections for campylobacteriosis, cryptosporidiosis, meningococcal disease, and influenza by season or annual mean.
    • Age (0-4/All) or Sex (M/F) for mathematical model projections for campylobacteriosis by season or annual mean.
    • Age (0-4/All) for mathematical model projections for cryptosporidiosis by season or annual mean.
    • Age (<1/1-4/5-9/10-12/13-19/20-25/26-39/>39/All) for mathematical model projections for meningococcal disease (only annual mean available).
    • Vaccination (Yes/No) for mathematical model projections for influenza with or without flu vaccination (only annual mean available).
    • Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus, or Aedes polynesiensis mosquito vector species for dengue (only annual mean available).
    • Minor or Minor & Major mosquito vector species for Ross River (only annual mean available).
  • Check the Show full background image will display maps based on all 11,491 grid cell records. Uncheck the box to limit the initial map display to the first 1,500 records.
  • Click the Search button to display the chosen disease map based on the above choices.
  • Once a map is displayed, the appropriate legend can be overlaid by clicking the Legend button.
  • Once a map is displayed, the Spatial Query tool provides four options to investigate the grid cell records for the displayed map (up to 1,500 records at a time):
    • Point Selection – click the map to select a single point.
    • Line Selection – click the map to apply the corners of the line. Double click to complete the line.
    • Rectangle Selection – click and drag to create the desired rectangle area.
    • Polygon Selection – click to apply to corners of the free-form polygon.
    • If there is an active Line, Rectangle or Polygon, this control will allow the altering of the current shape’s corners.
  • In conjunction with the Spatial Query tool, to view the grid cell records click on the Grid button to display the grid cell record box and the associated record values. Click on the button again to hide the box.
  • The Compare tool enables two disease maps to be viewed at a time.
